It was a day of zeros in the Midwest League on Wednesday, April 20th as shutouts littered the landscape and Minor League Baseball saw its first no-hitter of 2005.  Peoria Chief hurlers Sean Gallagher, Walt Nolan and Jon Hutton combined to toss a no-hitter at Cedar Rapids, winning 3-2 in 10 innings.

Starting pitcher Sean Gallagher registered a career-high eight strikeouts in going six innings, but fell victim of two Jose Rios errors and two walks of his own which allowed the Kernels to score a run in each of the first two innings.  Walt Nolan followed with three no-hit innings, fanning five along the way, as the Chiefs rallied with two runs on one hit to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

The Chiefs pushed across the winning run in the top of the tenth as Aaron Smith reached base on bunt single, moved to second as Ryan Harvey walked on four pitches, before Drew Larson singled to right off Kernels lefty Jamie Douglas.  Smith slid across home plate just ahead of the throw from Warner Madrigal to give the Chiefs a 3-2 advantage.

Right-hander Jon Hunton pitched a perfect 10th inning, catching Kernel second baseman Billy Boyer looking at a third strike to close out the no-no.

For the 22-year-old Hunton, it was his first save of the season, while Nolan picked up the win to move to 2-0 in 2005.  Gallagher has yet to allow an earned run this season as the right-hander pushed his streak to 16-2/3 innings.  It was the first no-hitter for the Chiefs since April 28, 1993; when Scott Gardner and Anthony Lee combined to no-hit the Springfield Cardinals in a seven inning contest.

The same evening in the Midwest League; Wisconsin, Quad Cities and Southwest Michigan logged shutouts.

Wisconsin’s trio of Jason Snyder, Cibney Bello and Craig James limited Burlington to three hits in a 6-0 win.  Snyder struck out seven in 7-2/3 innings allowing all three hits to move to 3-0 for the season.  James picked up his first save of 2005 pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Swing of Quad Cities held Kane County scoreless in their 2-0 victory, as Michael Parisi, Kevin Ool and Mike Sillman allowed just six Cougar hits on the night.  Parisi notched his third win of the season without a loss, fanning 10 in 7-1/3 innings of work.  Ool and Sillman did not allow a hit the rest of the way as Sillman collected his first save of the season.

Four Southwest Michigan pitchers combined to shutout Dayton, 12-0, as outfielder Phil Gentry collected the only hit of  the night for the Dragons.

Starter Eddie De La Cruz tossed four no-hit innings in superb no decision work.  Nicholas Wagner picked up the win with two shut out innings in relief, followed by Aaron Walker (2 IP) and Tony Perez (1 IP).
