It was as easy as 1-2-3--- as the Cedar Rapids Kernels turned a triple play in their 7-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on April 13. The triple-killing was the fourth in Cedar Rapids 44-year history.
Rattlers' center fielder Michael Saunders led off the sixth inning with a single to right off reliever Chris Howell. Bryan Sabatella followed with a walk, placing Wisconsin runners on first and second.
Then the fun began, as Jeff Flaig connected on a low liner to Cedar Rapids shortstop Hainly Statia that was ruled a trap, as the umpire hesitated in making the call. Statia tagged Saunders who was in limbo between second and third base, then tossed the ball to second sacker Ryan Leahy to force Sabatella. Leahy then threw to first to complete the triple play.
Howell would toss three scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season, as well as a memory to last a lifetime.
