Not Profitable?
would like to revisit one of my entries from a previous year just to show the facts of the matter.

Freedom is what America is all about
I recently read an article in a newspaper celebrating the fact that Carlos
Delgado does not come out for the singing of "God Bless America". He
chooses not to because of our decision to go to war against terrorism.
Carlos, who undoubtedly has an astute sense of conflict in history, calls
this war the "the stupidest war ever". Steve Wilstein, the man who wrote
the article, proclaimed, "Delgado is that rare ballplayer who exhibits a
conscience about social issues".

What's in your wallet?
Just a few years ago during bargaining meetings, owners of major league baseball teams were trying to sell their idea that small market teams could not feasibly compete with large market teams.

Not Sure ?
This is the first year in my professional career that I do not know what organization I will be in. It is both troubling and invigorating. It would have been nice to stay with one team my entire career, but now I can figure out if the grass really is greener somewhere else. Maybe a change will do me some good.

A Sick Feeling
No year that I have been a part of the St. Louis Cardinals has ended before October. Unfortunately, this year will break that streak.

Act like you been there
It seems to me that every highlight shown on television is of some loser trying to draw attention to himself. The "act like you have been there before" theory must have been lost somewhere.

Moving Forward
I have recently begun a throwing program designed to gradually get me back into game conditions. This is almost like learning how to throw all over again. Mentally, it doesn't seem that difficult, but the physical discomfort can be tedious at times.

How old are you?
The recent signing of a supposed 13 year old soccer player to a million dollar contract by Nike stirs up some poignant questions.

Some Unpleasant Things
Many months have passed, and there have been just as many changes in my personal life and the world in general.

D.K. and Jack
In a world of billions, it should not be possible for two men to stand out from the crowd. But for anyone who had the privilege of meeting both Jack Buck and Darryl Kile, that was indeed the case.

Mind and Body
The end of the year is usually a time where my mind and body are both tired. This year is a little different. My mind is worn out, but I have not pitched in the last month and a half. I feel that these days have been wasted because I should have been pitching in the big leagues during this time. Instead, I have been on the triple-A team in Memphis.

Strike? Who are the bad guys?
Mentioning the word "strike" always stirs up emotions more than any other word in baseball these days. It is usually followed by the words "greedy players". On the surface, this is exactly what the owners want fans to say. What they don't want you to know is that there would be no strike talk if the owners would not be so intent on forcing our hand.

Stech still loves to Hit!
A trip to Houston early in the year was looked at as a break from the cold weather before the introduction of Enron Field. The name may have changed, but the effect on pitchers has not. The days of the cavernous fields like the Astrodome are a thing of the past, with hitter friendly fields now being the rule rather than the exception. Even the weather left something to be desired. It was windy and overcast much of the time. The wind, of course, was blowing out.

Focus on the Season
This off-season was the shortest of my six years of professional baseball. It is also the first time that I had the opportunity to relax instead of worrying about graduate school or working. The season lasted a little longer because of September 11 and the playoff games against Arizona, but I wish that it would have been a couple of weeks longer.
